Voting has just got easier. Now, voters can get information about their electoral roll, polling station and other details on their mobile phones.

The election department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing a programme that will answer all the voters’ queries.

Given the civic elections in February 2012, the BMC is attempting to ensure that voters have a hassle-free voting process. According to the state election commission’s directive, the BMC is going to start a drive to raise awareness and ensure maximum enrollment and voter turnout.

Voters have to SMS me to 56677 and they will get their electoral roll number, polling booth and other information. “Initially they have to SMS BMC (space) voters to 56677, then follow given instructions given,” said an official from BMC’s election department.

“The service has not yet begun, but should be functioning in the next two months,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.

“Many times voters do not even know their electoral roll number, polling booth etc so they avoid voting,” said the official.
