This is the very jail where anti-corruption campaigner and social activist Anna Hazare was kept for a brief period and had to be released because of the tremendous support and peaceful agitation by thousands of Indians.


Tihar jail also houses hardcore criminals as well as affluential politicians charge sheeted for various scams and criminal activities.

Delhi Prisons has two Prison Complexes, one at Tihar being one of the largest prison complex in the world comprising of nine central prisons and one District Prison at Rohini Prison Complex. The total population in ten prisons is around 12000 prisoners against the sanctioned capacity of 6250 prisoners. There was steady increase in the prisoner's population.



The barracks and cells are being provided with mosaic tiles with flushing system in the toilets. Each barrack/cell has adequate number of ceiling and exhaust fans for proper ventilation.

There is provision of Recreation Room, equipped with facilities of indoor games, library and a TV for entertainment of inmates.

The prisoners are being served hot and fresh food through a food trolley. There is provision of dining space in the ward so that food may be served in community spirit. Separate prison is earmarked for women inmates with the provision of crèche for keeping children below 6 years of age.

Video conferencing facility has been setup between Tihar/Rohini jails with District Courts at Tis Hazari, New Delhi, Karkardooma and Rohini. This facility is used for extension of judicial remands and trials in some cases.

Poor inmates are provided with free clothing as per the seasonal requirement. All inmates are provided with seasonal bedding. The inmates on payment basis can procure items of daily need, toiletries and eatables from the Prisoner Welfare Canteen.

Special food is provided on the days of National importance and Festivals.

In all the prisons, sports like volleyball, cricket, basketball, kho-kho, kabbaddi, chess, carom etc. are organised during winter sports festivals, which are popularly known in the jail as "Tihar Olympics".







A permanent Vipassana center has been opened in Tihar Jail No.4, where two courses of ten days duration are organised regularly.




As a part of community participation in the reformation and social integration of prisoners after release, a large number of respectable members of non-Governmental organisations, Retired Major General, Professors of I.I.T Delhi, Eminent Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Principals and Teachers of various educational institutions have been conducting various activities in the prisons.

Different articles ranging from confectionaries items to Furniture, Carpets, Oils and soaps etc. are under the T. J. brand.
